Glen Forrest Community Kindergarten

A bit about what we do.

Glen Forrest Community Kindergarten is a beautiful space amongst the trees, providing children a perfect place to learn and grow. For over thirty years GFCK has been providing a Kindergarten program for 4 year olds within the community and its surrounds.

GFCK offers an alternative to mainstream schooling for a child’s Kindergarten year. When choosing GFCK, you can be assured that your child will be in a calm, nurturing environment where children are encouraged to explore, investigate, wonder, imagine, play and learn in a developmentally appropriate setting, under the guidance of experienced, dedicated teachers.

“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” — Margaret Mead

Our philosophy.

At GFCK, we believe that anything is possible. Our main aim is for all our students to gain a genuine love of learning. We believe in developing the whole child and consider all aspects of development when planning our program. Developing a child’s social, physical, emotional and cognitive skills within an age-appropriate environment that is designed to encourage curiosity, is central to the development of our learning programs.

Our program.

Play - Opportunities for free, uninterrupted play are vital to a child’s overall development and are an important vehicle for learning. At GFCK we value the importance of play and provide many opportunities for both inside and outside play throughout the day.

Gross & Fine Motor Development - During these early years of schooling, strengthening fine and gross motor skills is vital. Through our daily fitness program, we focus on building strength in our large muscle groups and developing gross motor skills such as safe climbing, skipping, hopping, jumping, running and kicking. We also focus on developing core strength through balancing activities and other core strength exercises.

As a part of our Pre-literacy program, we spend time strengthening the small muscles in the children's hands and fingers and developing their fine motor abilities. It is important to build these skills to set them up for success when they are ready to start writing.

Nature-based Activities - We have a beautiful, nature-based playground, with lots of different areas for children to explore. We value the importance of learning about our environment and aim to teach children to respect and care for the world around us. We have a veggie garden where the children are involved in planting, watering and taking care of different types of edible plants and using our food scraps to make compost. We actively teach the children to recycle and reuse whenever possible. Sustainability is important to us at GFCK and we encourage the children to develop sustainable habits.

Embedding Aboriginal Perspectives – We acknowledge and respect the traditional owners of our land and feel that it is imperative to teach the next generation the stories, songs, culture and history of our First Nation people. Children attending GFCK will learn Noongar language through stories, song and everyday rituals. They will develop an age-appropriate understanding of Aboriginal history, learn Aboriginal stories, explore Aboriginal art and sing songs using Noongar language.

Emotional and Social Well-being When a child feels safe, supported, calm and happy, the learning can start! We aim to ensure that all children feel this at Kindy but also acknowledge that all feelings are ok. It is ok to feel sad, angry, frustrated and anxious, and we want children to feel comfortable talking about how they feel. Through stories, play, dramatisation and activities, we will teach children strategies to help them cope with and overcome these feelings so that they can return to feeling calm and safe.

As teachers, we value the importance of building strong, trusting relationships with our students so that they feel supported in this new learning environment. We invest a lot of time into getting to know our students and learning about their interests, experiences, abilities, likes and dislikes so that we are able to gain a real understanding of each and every child in our care.
